By design.

Bhutan has no Marriotts, no Hiltons, no Holiday Inns — and the country prefers it that way. You sleep in licensed boutique hotels, heritage farmhouses, or premium lodges.

A boutique Bhutanese three-star hotel courtyard

01 · Boutique three-stars

The default option.

Most Bhutan trips use licensed three-star hotels. The bar set by the Department of Tourism is high — most would be four-stars elsewhere. Clean, modern, Bhutanese-owned.

  • Paro · Hotel Druk, Tashi Namgay, Olathang
  • Thimphu · Hotel Druk Thimphu, Phuntsho Pelri
  • Punakha · Dhensa Boutique, Hotel Vara
  • Bumthang · Yu-Gharling, Mountain Resort

02 · Heritage & farmhouse

Closer to home.

Heritage hotels are built in traditional Bhutanese style, more atmospheric, often family-owned. Farmhouse stays put you in a working household for one or two nights — hot stone bath, traditional meal at the hearth.

  • Zhiwa Ling Heritage · Paro
  • Naksel Boutique · Paro
  • Termalinca Resort · Thimphu
  • Farmhouse stays · Paro / Bumthang / Phobjikha

  • Amankora · Paro / Thimphu / Punakha / Gangtey / Bumthang
